MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka's Windforce Plc, has imported seven containerized battery energy storage systems (BESS), which can store 280Mh of solar energy and deliver them at night, the state information office said.

The BESS units will deliver 70MW or power.

The BESS systems will be fixed at grid substations in Panadura, Beliatta, Hambantota, Ampara, Vavunathivu, Valachchenai and Mahiyanganaya.

At the moment BESS systems are coming up in six other locations, the statement said.

Eight battery systems which can store and deliver 80MW of electricity, imported in early June are expected to be installed by end July.

Unlike coal and fuel, solar energy is available in the daytime and has to be stored and delivered in the night. For that under competitive tendering, about 20 rupees a unit has to be paid by electricity consumers. (Colombo/July27/2026)
