Sri Lanka Eyes Electrifying Urban Railway Lines with Foreign Aid

MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka's Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development has proposed electrifying three urban railway lines with foreign development aid, Cabinet spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa said.

"Railway lines with high density corridors have been identified for electrification with the aim of improving transport capacity, reducing travel time and supporting environmentally sustainable public transportation," Minister Jayatissa said.

"These development activities are expected to be implemented with the assistance of international development agencies, as part of the country’s long-term transport modernization strategy."

In the main line section from line from Maradana to Ragama including the development of railway station buildings at Gampaha, Veyangoda, Mirigama and Polgahawela.

Kelani Valley Line - Railway line from Maradana to Makumbura.

Coastal Line - Railway line from Maradana to Panadura. (Colombo/June28/2026)
