MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka's Cabinet of Ministers has approved drafting laws to regulate cryptocurrencies and virtual asset providers, to reduce the risk of financial crimes, spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Already people had ways of investing in virtual assets and crypto currencies but there was no registration of oversight.

A panel under the Deputy Minister of Digital Economy has recommended that the Securities and Exchange Commission regulate virtual assets in a framework that co-ordinates with revenue authorities and the Financial Intelligence Unit.
