MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka awarded contracts to two suppliers in 2027 to reduce the risk of depending on one supplier, Cabinet spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa said.
Aditya Birla Global Trading (Singapore) Pte Ltd was given a contract to supply 1.596 million metric tonnes (+/-) 10 percent.
Mohit Minerals Limited (India) would supply 684,000 metric tonnes of 30 percent.
The second supplier had to agree to sell coal at the same price as the first supplier.
Sri Lanka ended up with low calory coal last year which generated lower than required power, triggering charges of fraud after the deal was initially defended by government officials.
Sri Lanka's energy minister stepped down and inquiry is now conducted. (Colombl/Aug11/2026)
