Japan Gives Sri Lanka Officials Half Billion Rupees for Scholarships

MONETABRIEF – The Government of Japan has given a gran of 282 million Japanese Yen or about 591 million Sri Lanka rupees to fund scholarships for senior government officials.

"This project aims to train young promising administrative officers in the public sector at various universities in Japan and develop their knowledge and skills to be future national leaders in their respective fields," the Japanese embassy in Colombo said in a statement.

"Their research areas vary from Public Policy, International Relations and International Development, Macroeconomics, Public Finance and Investment Management, to Industry Development Policy and Investment Promotion."

"The project will contribute not only to enhancing individual capacities but also to improving institutional capacity of the public sector, thereby supporting sound and sustainable development of Sri Lanka."

Under the project, 15 public sector officials will be sent for a 2-year Master’s degree programmes from 2027.

Since its inception in 2010, Japanese human resources development scholarships (JDS) has supported 254 public sector officials from Sri Lanka. (Colombo/Aug18/2026)
