MONETABRIEF – A Sri Lanka Muslim Congress legislator resigned in line with a party agreement to share its lone National List seat with other senior stalwarts of the minority community, a party spokesman said.
M.S. Abthul Wazeeth submitted his resignation on Monday to Acting Secretary-General of Parliament Hansa Abeyratne, who informed the Election Commission of the vacancy in the 225-member legislature.
"He stepped down because of an understanding that we have. Our National List MP will make way for another SLMC member after a year," a party spokesman told Monetabrief.
Wazeeth was sworn in last July and quit after a year and two months in Sri Lanka’s 10th Parliament. He took the place of M.S. Naleem, who resigned in March last year after just three months as an MP to contest local elections.
The SLMC is holding its annual delegates’ convention on Wednesday at Kathankudy, after ceremonies commemorating the 26th death anniversary of its founding leader, M.H.M. Ashraff.
The founder of the SLMC was killed in a helicopter crash. (COLOMBO/Sept14/2026)
