MONETABRIEF – India will support a ferry to Sri Lanka with viability gap funding for the third year, as part of a commitment to enhance regional connectivity, the Indian High Commission (embassy) in Colombo said.
The passenger ferry runs between Nagapattinam in India and Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka's Jaffna peninsula.
The financial support is close to 300 million SriLankan rupees a year.
Since the ferry service was resumed in August 2024, nearly 52,000 passengers have used it.
Additional "routes and services that could further expand maritime connectivity and deepen economic and people-to-people linkages between India and Sri Lanka," are being explored, the High Commission said.
India has also committed 65 million dollar in grant aid to rehabilitate the Kankesanthurai Harbour. (Colombo/September20/2026)
