Sri Lanka Prime Loans up 136bp, New Deposits Up 80bp, Since Rate Hike

MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka's prime lending rate measured weekly has risen 136 basis points in 2026 since a rate hike and, and new deposit rate has risen 80 basis points, the central bank said.

The average deposit rate has risen 57 basis points.

Lending rates tend to rise faster than deposit rates in Sri Lanka after mis-targeted rates are corrected when balance of payments problems emerge.

The monthly average prime lending rate has risen 113 basis points.

The average new lending rate has risen 106 basis points.

The new SME rate has rise 113 basis points.

Sri Lanka hike its policy rate by 100 basis points in May after the currency collapsed and inflation has soared above its controversial 7 percent ceiling.
