MONETABRIEF - Sri Lanka's rupee closed at 332.55/65 to the US dollar in the spot market Friday, stronger from 332.60/70 a day earlier, dealers said, while bond yields were steady.

The rupee closed at 332.15/25 to the US dollar Friday indicating a weakening around 45 cents over the week.

Excess liquidity in money markets which were unsterilized or partially sterilized were 392 billion rupees on Friday morning.

When the liquidity was mostly built up by printing money to buy dollars (monetizing a balance of payments surplus), and buy-sell fx swaps (monetizing dollar assets of commercial banks).

If the macro-economists do not return the dollars when the liquidity turns into credit and imports but dishonors the notes like a person who issues a dud checque which bounces, the rupee depreciates.
