MONETABRIEF β Manila-based Asian Development Bank has approved a 100 million US dollar credit for Sri Lanka to improve social protection for elderly and the poor.
The credit is made up of a 50 million dollar project loan and 50 million dollar policy loan.
The Promoting Resilience and Opportunity for Inclusive Recovery Sector Development Program will help the Government expand livelihood and employment opportunities for low-income households, improve eldercare services.
"Sri Lankaβs economic recovery must translate into meaningful improvements in the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable people," ADB Country Director for Sri Lanka Shannon Cowlin said in a statement,
"This program will help expand economic opportunities for poor households, strengthen social care services for an aging population, and build a more inclusive, responsive, and resilient social protection system that supports long-term recovery and shared prosperity."
Sri Lanka's central bank triggered instant poverty in 2022 March by busting the rupee from 184 to 300 and driving up inflation by 70 percent.
In 2026 it again busted the rupee amid a Middle East war and the tail end of a credit cycle in the US, which has now exceeded four years. (Colombo/Oct22/2026)
