MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka is appealing a proposal by the US Trade Representative to imposed import tariffs on shipment from the island, Export Development Board Chairman Mangala Wijesinghe said.
The US Trade Representative proposed 12.5 percent tariffs on countries that export goods to the US using forced labour in June.
A committee of stakeholders were appointed to come up with the appeal and Sri Lanka would be presenting its case on July 09, Wijesinghe told reporters on July 06.
Regional peer nations like Bangladesh are to be subjected to 10 percent tariffs. A series of food items have been exempted from the tariffs.
The US Trade Representative said it would conduct appeal hearings from July 07. (Colombo/July06/2026)
