MONETABRIEF – Some of Sri Lanka's non-state fuel distributors have not claimed the 100 rupee per litre subsidy given for diesel for all shipments, Deputy Minister of Finance Anil Jayantha said.
Sri Lanka announced a subsidy of 100 rupees per litre for diesel and 20 rupees per litre for petrol for all fuel distributors.
State-run CPC had to buy some diesel at prices as high as 280 dollars a barrel. At the time some shipments were cancelled and the country was in danger of running out of fuel.
Subsidy was provided was subject to a limit of 100 rupees, but distributors had to submit actual costs to claim it he told reporters on June 29.
"For any loss that occurs within the subsidy scheme they have to provide inflation on how much the loss is," Minister Jayantha said.
"We declared up a maximum of 100 rupees. But some private players at the very beginning did not claim that much, as that was not the cost.
If private players had incurred costs higher than the 100 rupees a per liter, the government can look at such requests to see whether an extra concession can be given, he said.
