MONETABRIEF - Sri Lanka's National Systems Operator has requested proposals from private investors for battery energy storage systems (BESS) which can store 1,000MegaWatt hours of energy and deliver them in four hours at 250MW.
BESS units of 10MW/40MWh each are to be installed in 25 locations in the grid.
The investors will get a 15 year build operate own (BOO) concession to store and supply energy to the national electricity grid.
Sri Lanka now has a large volume of rooftop solar, but peak demand is at night.
The BESS unit will allow the grid to store excess renewable energy and deliver it at night and also cope, smoothening supply and demand.
Solar and wind plants without batteries give intermittent energy, creating supply shocks to the grid and also lack the inertia of rotating engines that can absorb demand changes.
Sri Lanka's last tender for batteries drew bids of around 2 million rupees per MegaWatt per month to around 17 rupees per kilowatt hour. (Colombo/July15/2026)
