MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka will send officers abroad to record statements from witnesses when they are too frightened to come back to the country, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake told parliament.
Sri Lanka saw multiple killings, kidnapping and disappearances of journalists and pro-democracy activists before 2015 which have not been investigated or the perpetrators to brought to justice.
"There is a fear of giving evidence from within Sri Lanka," President Dissanayake told parliament.
"Some witnesses say they are afraid to come to Sri Lanka to testify. They have requested to provide their statements from another country.
"We have now enacted legislation for this. Accordingly, we have made arrangements to send officers to the embassies in those countries to record statements from those witnesses. We expect to [send someone] to Australia very soon for this purpose.
"This is because witnesses are afraid. Such a country exists".
During Sri Lanka's 30-year civil war and the immediate aftermath, many activists and journalists fled the country. (Colombo/June27/2026)
