Thieves had damaged 85 percent of the lighting system of the Colombo-Katunayake expressway, a post-cabinet statement said.
Earlier reports said thieves had robbed electrical cables of the lighting system, which are made of metals like copper.
Initially the Peliyagoda, Kerawalapitiya, Seeduwa and Ja-Ela interchanges and the freeway from New Kelani Bridge to the Peliyagoda Fish Market and from Seeduwa to the Bandaranaike International Airport will be repaired.
The repairs in two packages are estimated to cost 1,098.50 million.
