MONETABRIEF – Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, founder of Colombo-based Centre for Policy Alternatives was presented with its inaugural Freedom Award by Advocata Institute, a SriLanka-based think tank.
The award recognized his efforts in advancing the rule of law and civic freedoms of Sri Lanka citizens.
Advocata said the award was made as economic freedoms cannot advance without a "foundation of rule of law, transparent institutions, and protected liberties" which allows markets, business, and citizens to flourish within a stable, trust-based society.
"This award celebrates a scholar, a policy pioneer, and an architect of accountability," said the Institute’s Chief Executive Officer, Dhananath Fernando.
"Dr. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu's legacy embodies our belief that liberty and prosperity must grow together."
The award was presented by Sarath Rajapatirana, Academic Chair of the Advocata Institute at the Asia Liberty Forum which was held in Colombo from September 10 with the participation of a number of think tanks from Asia.
Saravanamuttu said he was particularly warmed by the award as it was made by a Sri Lanka-based organization which represented peer recognition.
A national impeachment in the 1990’s had made Saravanamuttu, who had studied at the London School of Economics, to return from the United Kingdom and lead the newly founded Centre for Policy Alternatives.
He later helped start the Centre for Monitoring Election violence and also Transparency International Sri Lanka in (2002).
Advocata said its freedom award will be presented periodically to those who dedicated their lives to the protection and advocacy of civic, economic, political and personal freedom in Sri Lanka. (Colombo/Sept11/2026)
