MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka is on track to comfortably reach a 70 percent renewable power target by 2030, Chairman of the island's National Systems Operator, Pradeep Perera said.
"Through our interim plan we will reach 69 percent by 2029," Perera told reporters.
"There is no problem in moving to 70 percent by 2030."
Sri Lanka is currently revising the Long-Term Generation Plan for the utility.
"We do not plan to stop at 70 percent. Our intention is to exceed 70 percent," Perera said. "We may be able to exceed 70 percent and go to 75 and 80 percent by 2035 and 2040."
"We are working on that also."
Sri Lanka generated over 60 percent of electricity from renewable energy in 2025, he said.
Sri Lanka had potential to develop rooftop solar alone up to 20 to 30 GigaWatt hours, Chairman of Sri Lanka's Sustainable Energy Authority, Wijendra Bandara said.
Studies had shown that the potential for on-shore wind power was 24GWh. Off shore wind had a potential 57GWh.
In 2025 Sri Lanka generated 17,802 GWh of energy, which grew 5.9 percent from a year earlier with 10,715GWh of renewable energy.
Preliminary published data showed that 59 percent (6306GWh) of it came from the hydro plants of the former Ceylon Electricity Board, which grew 16 percent. But non-conventional renewable energy grew at a faster 27 percent to reach 4,036 GWh or 37 percent. (Colombo/Sept28/2026)
