MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka has secured 60 million dollars in financing for an irrigation project from OPEC Fund for Development for which the Asian Development Bank has also agreed to provide 200 million dollar Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
The entire project, called Mahaweli water security investment project, is estimated at 536.5 million US dollars.
The cabinet of ministers had approved signing an agreement with the OFID, he said.
The project is aimed at improving food security and reducing poverty in Sri Lanka's dry zone.
It involves digging a 7 kilometre tunnel and building 68 kilometres of open and closed channels.
The project will provided pressurized water for high value agriculture. (Colombo/Oct27/2026)
