MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka is planning to add 1,602 MegaWatts of solar and wind power to the national grid from 2027 to 2029, Energy Minister Aruna Karunathilake said.
In 2027 647 MegaWatts of solar and 50 MegaWatts of wind power is planned.
In 2028 300 MegaWatts of solar and 160 MegaWatts of wind power is planned.
In 2029 450 MegaWatts of solar and 0 0 [or a negligible amount of] wind power is planned.
Opposition legislator Shanakiyan Rasamanickam , said due to new tariffs for the solar the targets may not be achieved. Minister Karunathilake said if solar purchase tariffs were kept high, people who do not have solar and everyone will have to pay high prices for electricity. (Colombo/Nov06/2026)
