MONETABRIEF - Sri Lanka's plans to increase solar capacity to 4588MW by 2029 as more battery energy systems are added to time shift power to the night peak, Energy Minister Aruna Karunathilake said.
Sri Lanka now nad 3000MW of rooftop and ground mounted solar generating about 1,800MW to 2,000MW of power during the sunny hours of the day.
On gloomy days the output fell as low as 600MW but generally about power equal to around 60-70 percent of installed capacity was produced on sunny days.
Solar now produced about 15 to 25 percent of daily energy needs, officials said.
Sri Lanka hopes to connected 4588.7MW solar power by 2029, Minister Anura Karunathilake said.
Sri Lanka now has 2,542 MW of rooftop solar and 534 MW of ground mounted solar.
Out of 7.1 million electricity subscribers, about 150,000 now had solar power systems.
As battery energy systems are built more rooftop solar will be connected, Chairman of the National Systems Operator, Pradeep Perera said.
Up to 2027, the electricity grid planned to connect 1392MW of rooftop and ground mounted solar, Minister Arunathilake said.
By October 2024 there were around 1,400 MW of rooftop solar connected to the grid,
In 2025, 938.8 MW were connected. Up to August 2025, 202.3 MW of roottop were connected.
In 2025-2026, 1141.1 MW of rootop solar were connected.
In 2025, 117.2 MW of ground mounted solar were added to the 163.4 MW that existed in October 2024.
Up to August 2026, 193.4 MW were added.
In the year two years 1141MW of rooftop and 370MW of ground mounted solar totaling 1513MW had been connected.
