MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka will stop painting the finger of voters with indelible ink at polling booths in the future as provisions have now been introduced to make identity cards mandatory, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
Both of these requirements are intended to prevent the casting of more than one vote by the same voter at a single election.
"It has been observed that following two different methods at the same time to achieve the same objective hinders the efficiency of the duties performed at polling stations and also incurs additional costs," Minister Jayatissa said.
"Therefore, it has been found appropriate to remove the legal provisions regarding the use of indelible ink and marking the voter with the appropriate mark from all Election Acts."
The cabinet had approved a proposal by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to amend the following provisions on elections laws in Sri Lanka.
*Section 36 of the Presidential Elections Act, No.15 of 1981
* Section 38 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No.1 of 1981
* Section 36 of the Provincial Councils Elections Act, No.2 of 1988
* Section 53A of the Local Authorities Elections Ordinance (Chapter 262) (Colombo/June28/2026)
