MONETABRIEF β Sri Lanka's Treasuries yields extended falls at Wednesday's auction with all maturities sold, data from the state debt office showed, as excess liquidity in money markets went up.
The 3-month yield fell 33 basis points to 9.44 percent from 9.77 percent with all offered 55 billion rupees sold.
The 6-month yield fell 21 basis points to 9.78 percent from 9.99 percent with all offered 50 billion rupees sold.
The 12-month yield fell 18 basis points to 10.01 percent with all 35 billion rupees sold.
Excess liquidity in money markets soared to 249 billion rupees on August 12 and they were not permanently sterilized.
The central bank which busted the rupee after denying convertibility to the people by dishonoring the note issue claiming there was a (negative) 'external shock' has bought dollars heavily and resisted an appreciation in what a what is a positive external shock as foreign investor bought into rupee bonds selectively using exchange rate policy against the commonweal, analysts have shown.
However this week some appreciation has been allowed.
In the past when foreign investors sold out (also after depreciating using exchange rate as the first line of defence to dishonor the note issue and trigger panic), they have been blamed for depreciation. (Colombo/Aug13/2026)
