MONETABRIEF - Sri Lanka is welcoming an initial memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran, the Foreign Ministry said.
"This ceasefire represents a significant step toward de-escalation and long-term regional and global stability, including through the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and providing for a framework for the continuity of negotiations," the statement said.
"Sri Lanka strongly supports the peaceful resolution of disputes through diplomacy and remains optimistic that this step will foster sustainable peace across the region."
"Sri Lanka extends its sincere appreciation to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the State of Qatar for their pivotal roles as mediators, and to all partners whose support was instrumental in arriving at this successful diplomatic outcome."
The US has said it has ended a Naval blockade of Iranian ports and shipping has started to resume from the Straits of Hormuz which was blocked by Iran after US started bombing the country with Israel.
The Straits of Hormuz is an international waterway, which used to carry around 20 percent of oil flows.
Other Gulf states are now ramping up pipelines that will allow them to by-pass the straits. (Colombo/June20/2026)
