MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka’s former foreign minister, Rohitha Bogollagama, was remanded in custody by the Colombo High Court pending the conclusion of a trial into a 2006 corruption case.
The 72-year-old politician was arrested after questioning by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) and was later produced before the High Court today.
The judge ordered his detention until the conclusion of the trial, which began in August last year in his absence after he failed to appear in court.
He was indicted in 2020 for allegedly misusing Rs 1.5 million of government funds for an event he hosted in London in 2006, while serving as minister of investment promotion.
Bogollagama was appointed foreign affairs minister by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and held the portfolio until 2010. The Yahapalana government later appointed him a provincial governor, and former president Ranil Wickremesinghe sent him to London as Sri Lanka’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom.
