MONETABRIEF β De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), the Dutch central bank, said it has shifted gold reserves from the US to London due to increased geopolitical unrest and to strengthen crisis preparedness.
Between March and August 2026, about 86 tonnes of gold were transferred mainly from the US to London while some stocks from Canada was also moved.
the combined total of approximately 313 tonnes held in the United States and Canada to London, which is regarded worldwide as a major trading centre for physical gold.
"In view of increasing geopolitical unrest, DNB is strengthening its crisis preparedness," the DNB said in a statement.
"Improving the liquidity and tradability of the Dutch gold reserves is part of these preparations.
"Moreover, a more balanced distribution of these reserves between North America, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands helps to spread risks and will make them more readily available for use in a crisis situation.
Keeping a larger share of the gold reserves in London strengthens the function of gold as an anchor of trust, and the metal is seen "as the ultimate reserve asset" because it is ideally suited to hedge extreme systemic risks, the DNB said.
βWith this relocation, we have improved the tradability of our gold reserves," DNB Governor Olaf Sleijpen said in the statement.
The DNB had 612.4 tonnes of gold by end 2025. The gold holdings in New York were cut from 31.3 percent to 18.5 percent and London holdings were raised to 32.1 percent from 18.1 percent.
Holdings in Ottawa was cut to 18.5 percent to 19.7 percent. (Colombo/Sept03/2026)
