MONETABRIEF – The embassy of Iran has requested permission from Sri Lanka to replace three sailors who are taking care of an impounded ship in Trincomalee, opposition legislator Rauff Hakeem said.
"The three sailors are now fatigued and are in mental stress," Hakeem told parliament, Wednesday.
"India has allowed 31 sailors in impounded ships to be replaced. But Sri Lanka's foreign ministry has still not given permission."
The Defence Ministry has also said they have no objection, he said.
Hakeem called on the government to allow the crew to be replaced.
There was no immediate response from government ministers.
The Iranian ship was impounded after hostilities broke out between US and Iran and it sought neutral protection in Sri Lanka.
Around 22 US sanctioned vessels are anchored off Sri Lanka defence sources said.
Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said they have not sought any assistance from Sri Lanka and were in international waters. (Colombo/Aug09/2026)
