MONETABRIEF – Australia-based low-cost carrier Jetstar has begun three times a week direct flights from Melbourne to Sri Lanka's capital Colombo with promotional fares offered until August 31.

Airport and Aviation Services (Pvt) Ltd, the state-run airport operator welcomed the inaugural flight with a water cannon salute on August 25.

"With Jetstar’s low fares, our new Melbourne to Colombo service will make our Australian and New Zealand network more accessible than ever for Sri Lankans," Jetstar CEO, Stephanie Tully said in a statement.

"We’ve already seen strong demand for flights, and Victoria is home to Australia’s largest Sri Lankan community, so we’re expecting the route to be popular with holidaymakers and those visiting family and friends."

Jetstar is operating widebody Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

The carrier said it is refitting the aircraft to double business class seats and will ad wi-fi to allow passengers to stream entertainment to their own devices.

A new lie-flat crew rest area will also let the aircraft fly for up to 16 hours. (Colombo/Aug30/2026)
