MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka's central bank has recommended a 5 percent inflation target for the next three years, and the government has accepted that, Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe said.
The International Monetary Fund has made a recommendation to reduce it at the next revision, but that was the agency's view he said.
Some local experts have other view, the government also has a view, he said.
The central bank has recommended 5 percent inflation target, and the government was known to have accepted it, Governor Weerasinghe said.
There have been calls to reduce the inflation target, to constrain the ability of the central bank to push up the cost of living, trigger currency collapses and social unrest, undermining democracy and also reduce the risk of a next default.
The central bank missed its controversial 5-7 percent target in 2026 as rates were hiked after the currency collapsed. (Colombo/Sept30/2026)
