MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka is considering a partnership with an international shipping line to boost volumes at the state-run East Container Terminal, Ports Minister Aruna Karunathilake said.
About five shipping lines have shown preliminary interest.
The exact commercial arrangement under which an international partner would come to the terminal has to be finalized, Minister Karunathilake said.
Cabinet approval will be sought for the plan before any formal proposals are invited he said.
The East Terminal has been financed and built by Sri Lanka Ports Authority and has no international or private joint venture partner.
Colombo Port has seen a surge of box volumes in 2025 and 2026 with the commissioning of the West Terminal by India's Adani and Sri Lanka's John Keells Holdings.
