MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka's gross domestic product grew 4.2 percent in the second quarter of 2026, with agriculture contracting 2.3 percent, industry up 7.3 percent and services up 2.7 percent, the statistics office said.
The second quarter economic outlook was "somewhat gloomy" due to the Middle East war, high fuel prices and a tourism slowdown dampening hotels and restaurants.
In agriculture, rice contracted 15 percent, fresh water fishing 61 percent and sugar cane 14.7 percent, but coconuts, vegetables and forestry expanded the Department of Census and Statistics said.
In industry, construction grew 13.9 percent driving mining and quarrying grew 17.4 percent. Manufacturing expanded 3.2 percent
In Services, wholesale and retail trade grew 1.4 percent, transport and warehousing 3.1 percent, computer programming 10 percent, insurance 8 percent while public administration and defence contracted 2.4 percent.
