The USTR proposed 12.5 percent tariff on exports to Sri Lanka saying the island was not taking enough measures to combat good made with the help of forced labour.
Sri Lanka was given July 09 for appeal hearing by the US Trade Representative.
Sri Lanka is hopeful of a reduction, Wijesinghe said without giving details.
Sri Lanka issued a gazette aimed at restriction imports of goods made with forced labour.
Such items could be potentially used as inputs for goods exported to the US.
Sri Lanka however has tight labour laws.
The 12.5 percent tariff is seen by analysts as a replacement for Trump tariffs which have been struck down by US courts and also aimed at China.
The US has exempted a number of goods and proposed a slightly reduced tariff of 10 percent for some countries like Bangladesh. (Colombo/July21/2026)
