Tharanga’s winning throw measured 88.55m. Singh produced a personal best of 85.72m, while Yadav registered 84.35m at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium to secure a place on the podium.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake congratulated Tharanga on winning Sri Lanka’s first Asian Games gold medal in the javelin.
"You have made the entire nation proud,” Dissanayake said on X. "On behalf of all Sri Lankans, I wish you continued success as you set your sights on the greatest prize of all: Olympic gold."
Tharanga has said he is targeting gold at the Los Angeles Olympics in July 2028.
"We remain fully committed to supporting you and all our aspiring sportsmen and sportswomen on the road to international success," Dissanayake said.
"Keep reaching for the skies, Rumesh – the nation is fully behind you!"
Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, the reigning Olympic champion and Asian record-holder, finished fourth with a throw of 80.29m.
Tharanga entered the competition as the standout men’s javelin thrower of 2026.
The 23-year-old Sri Lankan set a national record and a world-leading mark of 92.62m in Rome in June. He then threw 92.07m in Zurich and won the World Athletics Ultimate Championship earlier this month with a throw of 91.09m. (COLOMBO/Sept 28, 2026)
