MONETABRIEF – President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has vowed to press ahead with his campaign to prosecute large-scale corruption, saying those calling for his government’s ouster are those affected by the crackdown.
Speaking at a public rally in Kahatagasdigiliya in his native Anuradhapura district, the President said anyone who had stolen public property would be prosecuted, irrespective of the position they hold.
"I saw a former minister saying that there should be a limit to catching thieves," the President said. "Should there be a limit to catching thieves? There is no limit! Relevant investigations are being conducted."
Those who had wantonly stolen public wealth were being hauled up before courts.
"They know that for a major portion of the remainder of their lives, they will have to be in prison. They have now entered a fight to the death. For 76 years, these fraudsters jumped from one group to another. Now they are caught.
"They say that this government must be ousted. The people of this country have no such need. Those who scream like this are thieves, corrupt individuals, drug dealers, and those who dealt with the underworld."
The President held two similar public rallies in Polonnaruwa on Saturday, when the opposition Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP) also held a public meeting in Anuradhapura to drum up support for their group. (COLOMBO/Sept13/2026)
