MONETABRIEF – The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka has set new renewable feed in tariffs, including a tariff for battery energy systems for existing and new rooftop and other solar plants.
New solar plants above 250KW with a battery energy storage system (BESS) will get 45.33 rupees from the national grid. Existing ones will get 33.51 rupees and 0.95 percent of their existing SPPA rate for the peak nighttime.
Sri Lanka had about 1,000 MegaWatts of rooftop and ground mounted solar that can be potentially converted to BESS supported units, Chairman of the PUCSL, K P L Chandralal said.
At the moment some solar power is curtailed on holidays and at low demand times to maintain system stability.
The battery energy tariff will allow the plants to add BESS units and carry the energy to the night peak.
In the coming dry season there was a need for about 450MW of BESS capacity (for four hours) to avoid using liquid fuels, PUCSL officials said.
The grid was expected to connect at least 450Mw of BESS capacity by March 2027, the regulator said.
Feed in tariff were also set for other renewable plants.(Colombo/Aug24/2026)
