MONETABRIEF β Sri Lanka plans to begin construction of the Kurunegala-Dambulla section of the central expressway in November and December 2026, Highways Minister Bimal Rathnayake said.
The Kurunegala-Dambulla section of the expressway is expected to be started in November 2026.
The Pothuhera-Rambukkana section of the Central Expressway is expected to be completed by April 2027.
"There was a delay due to supply of bitumen but we expect it can be completed by April 2027," Minister Rathnayake told parlaimetn.
The Kadawatha-Mirigama section of the expressway is expected to be completed by May 2028, he said.
The Kurunegala-Galewela section is expected to be completed before 2030, he said.
An expressway from Kahathuduwa to Ingiriya will also be started from November or December.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had also asked to do the studies for an expressway from Katunayake to Chilaw.
An expressway from Anuradhapura to Vavuniya is being studied, he said.
Though one day all expressways should be connected, it was too expensive to connect all of them to Colombo at once.
The Puttalam to Anuradhapura existing road was as good as an expressway, he said. (Colombo/Sept08/2026)
