MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka's Hatton National Bank profits were flat in the June 2026 quarter at 11.7 billion rupees, amid higher loan loss provisions, even as net interest income went up, interim accounts show.
HNB Group which also has an insurance unit, reported earnings of 20.39 rupees per share for the quarter. In the six months to June, HNB reported earnings of 37.87 rupees per share on total earnings of 21.8 billion rupees, down 2.5 percent.
At bank level interest income grew 21 percent to 60.8 billion rupees, interest expenses grew 14 percent to 32.4 billion rupees and net interest income grew at a faster 29 percent to 28.4 billion rupees.
Net fee and commission income grew 21 percent to 6.6 billion rupees.
There was a currency panic in forex markets in the second quarter and spreads widened and there was also forward booking at high premiums.
Net gains from trading were 3.8 billion rupees.
HNB made provisions of 1.5 billion rupees for bad loans against a reversal of 4.7 billion last year.
Loans and advances grew 15.3 percent to 1,652 billion rupees in from December to June.
Deposits grew 7 percent to 2,100 billion rupees.
At group level gross assets grew 7.1 percent to 2,826 billion rupees. Net assets grew 2.93 percent to 311 billion rupees.
Tier 1 capital fell to 15.4 percent from 16.85 percent from December to June amid credit growth. Total capital adequacy fell 18.1 percent to 19.99 percent. (Colombo/Aug13/2026)
