MONETABRIEF – Mudslides and flash floods, believed to have been triggered by an earthquake in the Tibet-Nepal border, has killed and left missing hundreds including foreign tourists from India and other countries, media reports said.
The South China Morning Post said the disaster struck Nepal and spilled over to Gyirong county in the Tibet autonomous region including at a border checkpoint in the administered by the city of Shigatse.
Footage circulating online showed a tsunami-like mudslide hitting the checkpoint.
Other footage also showed mud and water sweeping across a valley tossing aside buildings as a river overflowed in flashfloods that carried mud and debris.
An earthquake that struck the region and forced a glacier to collapse to the Lhende Khola river in Nepal, is suspected to have caused the floods.
The river runs through both Nepal and Tibet.
At least 484 travellers, including 105 Indians, 93 Nepalis, 17 Malaysians, 12 British citizens, four South Africans, three U.S. citizens, have been reported missing, the Reuters news agency said.
One person each from Australia and the Netherlands are also missing.
Eight South Koreans working on a hydropower plant were also unaccounted for. (Colombo/Aug26/2026 - Update III)
