MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka's rupee closed at 330.70/331.00 to the US dollar Tuesday falling from 329.15/35 to the US dollar a day earlier, while bond yields continued to rise across maturities amid a sell-off, dealers said.

Sri Lanka rupee is usually depreciated by repudiating the central bank's note issue at the slightest negative domestic or external shock, 'under exchange rate as the first line of defence'.

But appreciation is prevented in a positive shock and the note issue expanded by dollar purchases to be repudiated in a negative shock, analysts have noted.

Sri Lanka runs into frequent currency trouble due to flexible inflation targeting, which involves targeting a domestic anchor without clean float.

The statistical framework rejects economics (Humes price-specie-flow-mechanism which was 're-discovered' after the corruption by the General Theory as the Monetary Approach to the Balance of Payments).
