MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka's tea production could be from extreme dry weather from a super El Niño early in 2027, while high grown output this August also fell to a 34-year low from excess rain and cloudy weather, Asia Siyake Commodities, said.
In August 2026, High Grown tea production fell to 3.1 million kilograms, the lowest for any month since the El Nino year of 1992, when output fell to 2.1 million kilos, based on Ceylon Teas Board data, Asia Siyake said.
But it was due to excessive rain.
In Sri Lanka, El Niño events tends to increase rain in the wet season and worsen the dry season that comes in the early part of the following year.
In the 1991-1192 El Niño event, 46 percent of Sri Lanka received less than 10 percent of the normal rainfall from January to March based on Department of Meteorology data, Asia Siyake said.
Sri Lanka is expecting an extreme dry period in early 2027.
Meanwhile this August total tea production had fallen 3.7 percent to 19.7 million kilos with High Growns down 15.8 percent.
Medium Growns also fell 14 percent to 3.2 million kilograms. But Low Growns increased to 13.1 million kilos from 12,7 million helping cushion the overall fall.
In the seven months to August 2026, tea production fell to 172.2 million kilos from 176.9 million, with High Growns marginally ahead at 38.3 million kilos from 38.1 million kilos.
Medium Growns declined 6 percent to 30.4 million kilos, while Low Growns fell 3 percent to 103.3 million kilos. (Colombo/Sept17/2026)
