MONETABRIEF – Storex (Private) Limited, a unit of Sri Lanka's Windforce Plc has commissioned the first 10MW/40MWh battery energy storage system (system) to store solar energy and supply in the night.
The BESS was connected to the national grid at a ceremony attended by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on September 18 in Anuradhapura, his media office said in a statement.
Sri Lanka has about 3,000 MW of solar plants, but daytime demand was lower than the night.
"Our challenge has been that, until now, we have not had the capacity to store the excess solar power generated during the daytime," Energy Minister Anura Karunathilake was quoted as saying in the statement.
"To overcome this challenge, we are currently implementing projects with a total capacity of 160 MW."
"We believe that we will be able to add the entire 160 MW to the national grid before the end of this year."
Windforce will build 13 such units totalling 130MW which will store four hours of energy (520MWh) to be discharged during the night peak. (Colombo/Sept18/2026)
