MONETABRIEF – Sri Lanka's Hemas group said it had bought a 75 percent stake in Twiga Stationers and Printers Limited, based in Kenya.

Hemas made the purchase through Atlas Axillia Company (Pvt) Ltd, its school supplies and stationery unit for 16.2 million dollars, the group said in a stock exchange filing.

Hemas said Twiga was the owner of "well-known stationery and learning brands" in Kenya.

"With East Africa and Bangladesh now forming important pillars of our international consumer strategy, we expect regional markets to play an increasingly meaningful role in the future growth of Hemas Consumer Brands," Sabrina Esufally, Managing Director – Hemas Consumer Brands said.

"Twiga’s brand equity, manufacturing base and distribution depth provide a strong platform to scale in stationery and, over time, understand and serve East African consumers across a broader consumer portfolio."

Kenya was a 136 million dollar economy with young growing population of over 54 million, the firm said. (Colombo/Aug17/2026 - Updated II with comments)
